Best shrimp burgers. Make sure to pair it with a sweet tea. This is one of my favorite places in Beaufort. The location makes for the perfect stop after a day at the beach. Local gem. Highly recommended.

These shrimp burgers were WHAT'S UP, but even supersized, they were very much on the small side for the price. This was also made more obvious by the fact that they are delicious, and you'll end up wanting to eat way more than one fairly thin patty. I highly recommend getting sweet potato fries on the side, as well as checking the hours before you go (by giving them a call). This was a great pit stop before/after a day at Hunting Island. FYI: Cash only.

No bargains here. We got the shrimp dinner with onion rings and slaw. Portions are small and the prices are not so cheap. Food was ok but you will pay a lot for a spoonful of coleslaw and a couple of onion rings with your shrimp. $10.99. Place your order at the window and wait until they call your number. Make sure you have cash because they don't take anything else. There are better places around if you want seafood. Try the Foolish Frog in Frogmore.

My wife and I hit up The Shack every time we visit Harbor Island. The shrimp boats dock across the street, so the seafood is off-the-boat fresh, quite literally. I always go for the large shrimp burger. It is the best shrimp burger I've ever had. Great batter and no filler, just chunks of buttery shrimp inside. I add their cocktail sauce, and pair it with a lemonade and whatever side I am feeling that day. But really you are good with any of the seafood. I'm not a clam strips fan, but I love their clam strips. I'm not a flounder fan, but I love their flounder. It's all in the family-recipe batter. Bring cash but don't expect fancy. If you want fancy, you're welcome to pay two-and-a-half times more at some tourist trap, that looks nice. Me? I'll stick to eating my tasty shrimp burger in a shack.

It is what it is. This is truly a shack. We ventured here as there are numerous to do lists that recommend it. They do NOT take credit card so remember to bring CASH! There is also no air conditioning but they had more seating than you would expect. They fried shrimp, fried fish, fried hush puppies, fried...fried...fried. We asked and they do cook in peanut oil so if there is an allergy be cautious. (although standard peanut oil is believed to be safe for peanut allergies). I had their shrimp burger and it overall tasted good, but for me nothing "fabulous" or "to die for". Which I was hoping for. Think of crab cake but with shrimp instead. The meal included a couple sides. Overall okay priced. A neat experience on a vacation but one visit on this vacation was enough.

I want to start off that we understood that with the word "Shack" in the name, we did not expect a fine dining experience for our visit to the Shrimp Shack. The parking is somewhat of a disorganized affair- think of how people park at a house party or picnic and you have the general idea. Not really a problem but I can see how some people could be put off by the lack of a paved lot with nice crisply painted lines, etc. We came to the Shrimp Shack at an "off" hour for lunch hoping that the line at the ordering window would have diminished- no such luck. It still was about a half hour wait to put an order in. I suppose this is a testament to their products that people are willing to wait like this to get a shrimp-burger? It was about 45 mins total from getting in line to sitting down at a table with our food. I can only imagine what it must be like at "peak" times. There was a local person behind us that must have sensed we were tourists and chatted with us in a kind and friendly fashion to pass the time. The order taker and the person who handed us our food were both very nice and welcoming. They had a sort of down home sweetness to their manner that made the hot, sticky wait in line somewhat easier to bear. The "process" in general did not seem conducive to parents with young or overly sensitive children. Beware of coming to the Shrimp Shack if you are not an adult with something of a quick wit. Yes the prices are somewhat higher than "Dollar Menu", but this is a resort area and anyone who doesn't expect to be up-charged to some degree could use a reality check. It's unfair to compare a handmade family recipe shrimp-burger to a national chain mystery meat burger in the first place. The alternative for those who complain about price, etc. is to GO to the national chain and get the usual dollar special. But I digress: As another reviewer mentioned- the super shrimp-burger with sweet tea is the hot ticket. I combined mine with sweet potato fries and added cocktail sauce just because that's the way that I roll. The burger was awesome and the fries good/fair; a bit soggy for my tastes but I am told that's the proper preparation here in the area. I wonder what they would be like with some malt vinegar on them? We chose to sit outside at one of the picnic tables and it was somewhat of a battle to fend off the insects. If I had it to do over again, I would try the inside screened dining area instead to avoid this problem. Unfortunately there are only a few seats "inside" so it's not always possible to snag a bug free seat. I noticed that people were friendly about sharing tables and such so it appears that being bold and asking to join someone else can pay off. I wanted to try either their key lime pie or pecan pie but waved it off as the line was still formidable after we finished with lunch and to be honest 30+ mins. standing in line for pie seemed absurd. Tip: order your dessert at the same time as your meal if at all possible, or call in your order when you are about 20 mins. from arrival because phone orders apparently bypass the wait in the "order" line altogether! Overall we loved our visit to The Shrimp Shack- not only for the delicious food but to enjoy a bit of the local color too. We hope you will give them a try when you are in the area.

Oh my.... Never thought of shrimp burger before, but the best thing I ever had. The fried shrimp dinner was amazing it was fresh shrimp, nice and crispy. It's a great place to stop at after a day at the beach. "The world travelers approved"

I live in Atlanta, and eat out about 5 days a week. My wife and I are total foodies very rarely eat at chain restaurants. I tell you all of this to let you know his place is amazing!! Order the shrimp burger. Get the super sized. It comes on a soft, but sturdy bun. They put a thin layer of tartar sauce on. I highly recommend adding the cocktail sauce which has a lot of horseradish in it. The French Fries are okay. The hush puppies are amazing. They only accept cash and check. If they ever wanted to open another restaurant I would totally fund it in Atlanta. There is nothing like the shrimp burgers I promise you!!!

A classic roadside seafood shack. We had the shrimp burger and shrimp dinner with sweet potato fries and onion rings. Both were good.

We ate the best beach lunch today. Reminds me of Aunt Carries in Pt Judith, RI. Make sure to put this on your to do list next time you are on Hunting Island.

Just took our son out to the Shrimp Shack for lunch Saturday. We have been going there for 30 plus years and the food is always great. Always get the Fried Shrimp dinner, you know the shrimp will be local and fresh. Looked at the other reviews and will try the Shrimp Chowder next time.

  • Ruby G.

Let me start off by saying that I feel really annoyed reading half of these reviews. I'm very confused by them. Where the Shrimp Burger recipe is a highly guarded family secret, I can tell it absolutely is not filled with breading. It's ground shrimp held together by some type of binding agent and absolutely delicious. I've never had another shrimp burger like this, one that was purely shrimp. The portion sizes of the sides can be small sometimes, but where else are you paying $1.50 for sides? Don't be greedy, order two! The place is called the Shrimp SHACK! Don't go there expecting fine dining. It's a quaint, beach restaurant where you can enjoy extremely local seafood on the screened in porch and feel the salty breeze as you sip on your very Southern, very sweet tea. It's impossible to take trip down to the local beaches and not make a stop at The Shack for some delicious local seafood. Almost everything is fried, but hey...that's how us Southerners do it. Try a seafood dinner with your favorite catch or combination of seafood and two sides. There hushpuppies are delicious. Simple. Not those dense cardboard balls you get at most seafood restaurants. These are light and fluffly. Shrimp Salad, Boiled Shrimp, and Deviled Crabs are your non fried options. Not feeling the seafood? Shrimp Shack has delcioius burgers, chick filets, and nuggets for the kids. The ladies in the back are the sweetest you've ever met. They've been running the show for years. During the summer you can find a gang of teenagers working their summer away. Order a tea or lemonade for free refills, soda refills are a quarter. Make sure you call for hours. They are very seasonal and never open on Sunday.

Not a fan at all. Sandwiches are very small. Wife had a shrimp burger. Maybe less than 1/4 lb. very skimpy. I had a flounder sandwich. Had two really small pieces of flounder. Had regular french fries that really tasted stale and sweet potatoe fries. They were ok. We most definatly will not return.

  • Charlie B.

Don't believe the hype. The shrimp burger is mostly cheap bun. The fries are like public school lunch soggy sad and just yuk! It's cash only and over priced The staff is very friendly though.

  • Michelle K.

Great shrimp burger! I've never had one before so I wasn't sure to expect- it's basically a patty of shrimp (some chopped but we couldn't see or taste any binding agent/filler) then it's fried and put on a basic white bun- simple but delicious! We got 3 sides- onion rings (great), sweet potato fries and regular fries (they were not hot- not sure how since there were a lot of customers) that was my only complaint. It's a whole in the wall- just expect it going in but I'd definitely go back.

Pretty average for a dive seafood joint. Had the shrimp burger. Was pretty good. Would have been better with some lettuce and tomato. Menu has non seafood items like chicken and burgers too. You order inside and dine either inside or outside. Prices are good considering location. Location is convenient. Lunch only. Cash or check only.

Love this place, but the shrimp burger is smaller than it use to be. Resulted in a sad and disappointing burger.

Eating a shrimp burger at the Shrimp Shack feels like going home for me. As a lowcountry born and raised kid, I know better than to expect top dollar, bourgeois food. This is the lowcountry. Shit's different here. We're laid back and eat marsh shrimp and go grab oysters in knee deep water in January. Shit, I'm ranting. On to the food. A shrimp burger should really be the only thing you order here. You can order hush puppies as well, but as stated in some other reviews, they're pretty par. The shrimp burgers are pretty fantastic. More than po boy, the patty is a fried group of shrimp actually semi-mashed into a patty. It's hard to explain, but it's amazing. Toss on some cocktail sauce and you have a perfect go-to comfort food on the run on your way to whatever island you're going to. The setting for your burger may look rundown to someone further inshore, but it's an ideal off the road location to enjoy true lowcountry food.

A group of us got takeout here last week while vacationing in St. Helena Island. Very generic shrimp on a basic blah bun. The sweet potato fries were okay. This is decent in a pinch, but not something I'd want to spend money to eat a second time.

  • Wilbur M.

Shrimp burger was good, but small. Food lacked flavor - didn't seem to be any seasonings in anything ordered by our group. Hush puppies were not greasy (good) but were just bread. Even a basic hush puppy should have some onion or corn and a touch of sugar. The breading on the rest of the fried food lacked flavor. Come on, show some pride in your product! I can really only recommend the shrimp burger and sweet potato fries.

  • T. C.

I loved the shrimp chowder, and will definitely go back for it! However, the famous shrimp burger (even mentioned on the well known magazine 'cooks illustrated') was bland, as were the hush puppies. The sweet potato fries had a really odd texture--very soft interior with a crunchy exterior. As for service, it's very slow. They also need to learn how to serve drinks before meals. A soda fountain for the public to use wouldn't be bad either.

  • Jennifer C.

It's ok but we were disappointed in both portion size and in the fact that is was pretty ordinary seafood. It's not a bad choice if you just want some basic seafood. Fried shrimp was good.

Hole in the wall, not a restaurant, order at the window, sit at benches, no credit cards !!!

I had the super shrimp burger today and it was super small. In the past it was much bigger. Hopefully it will will be a one time deal. I will give it another try.

I love the super shrimp burger platter with sweet potato fries and hush puppies. My wife and I go every time we are in town. I have heard mixed reviews on their beef burgers but it isn't the beef shack. Call ahead to place your order. And bring cash - no CCs accepted.

I've been going here for as long as I can remember, so about 23 years or so. The shrimp burgers are amazing- a secret family recipe that even the workers aren't all privy to. For the gentleman who was questioning where the shrimp comes from, please disregard his comment. First, if you know fresh shrimp, you can tell the difference between "shrimp from Vietnam" and fresh, local, wild caught shrimp which is what the Shrimp Shack serves. It is owned by the same people that own the Gay Seafood Company across the street so the seafood comes right off the boats and to the Shrimp Shack. Can't get any better than that! I no longer live in Beaufort, but when I am home, I must have a shrimp burger and Alvin Ord's. I like the sweet potato sticks, but some people do not. I always get shrimp here, but others in my family get the fish sandwiches and like them just as much as a shrimp burger.

Shrimp bugger and hush puppies, some of the best deep fried grub around.

  • Meredith H.

Really disappointed with the food. I've had much better fried shrimp. Hush puppy was inedible.

  • Dirk C.

The shrimp burgers are excellent. It's a roadside diner with seating inside and outside and screened porches. Don't expect more than a good sandwich and you won't be disappointed. We sat outside on a beautiful day and it was delightful. Not worth the drive unless you're visiting Hunting Island, or perhaps the Penn Center and are willing to drive another 15 minutes out of your way. If you are, though, you should stop. Who knows, maybe you'll see Pat Conroy. He lives on nearby Fripp Island.

I really wanted to like this place. It ended up being pricey and bland. They messed up the order. The fried sweet potatoes were a joke. I feel the need to repeat that it was the blandest meal we ate the entire week. The sweet tea was good, I suppose...

    (2)
  • John H.

Don't waste your money. Overrated. Fish sandwich, more bread than fish. Onion rings for $1.50 you get 4. Sweet potatoe sticks for $1.50 you get 4 and it was like eating fried baby food.

  • Brad L.

It looked like a must try driving by. Waited in line for a while to order - of course shrimp burgers for all. Paid - cash only. Waited a while for food to come to the server counter. Was disappointment in greasy bland food!! Pass this one by!

Horrible food and service!!! Crabcake sandwich was so bad I couldn't tell it even had crab in it. When we asked for something else we were told that there was nothing with it and no replacement was given.

Holy moly...the shrimp shack is awesome! I had my first shrimp burger 7 years ago when I was in Beaufort for a friend's wedding and always remembered it fondly. Fast forward to last week when I went to visit that same friend and was happily reunited with the shrimp burger from the Shrimp Shack. As Dan K. mentioned, the shrimp are caught that morning by the Gay Fish Company (same family that owns the Shrimp Shack) and then used that same day (talk about fresh). It was so delicious and better than I remembered. I got the regular as I thought the jumbo might be a bit gratuitous but I sort of wished that I'd just gone for it; It could be a couple years before I get back. A note to others that apparently lines can be out the door on the weekend and you may want to call for hours during the off-season. If you're in the area and you love shrimp, you absolutely have to stop here!

  • Brittany H.

AMAZING AMAZING AMAZING!!!! How anyone could give the Shrimp Shack less than five stars is beyond me. This restaurant has an atmosphere that is unparalleled and the homemade food really hits the spot after a day at the beach. You can show up with sandy toes and flip flops and feel right at home and welcome. I live in Ga but every time I vacation on Fripp it wouldn't be complete without a visit to The Shrimp Shack...and not to mention a visit to The Gay Fish Company as well for fresh shrimp to bring home!

  • Dan K.

This place is always busy and the reason is great seafood cooked as you wait. Owned by the Gay Fish Company the Shrimp Shack is an institution on the way to Hunting and Fripp Islands just outside of Beaufort, SC. Get a Shrimp Burger. My that's tasty! For years we surfed the local break and when we were so exhausted we couldn't surf anymore we went to the Shrimp Shack. Not fancy, but beautiful in every way. Family owned and the seafood doesn't get any fresher. From the boat to the Shrimp Shack and the boats are docked right across the road. Authentic coastal South Carolina food at your fingertips.

My father has a place just across the bridge on Harbor Island so I've been there about half a dozen times over the years. The concept is really great -- unpretentious (actually dirty) dive with window service and picnic tables all within sight of where the boats bring in the shrimp. Grab a shrimp burger and you should have the Palmetto State's version of a cheeseburger in paradise. That said, I don't go there anymore; here's why... 1. The shrimp burgers are made from diced shrimp (I guess), bread and eggs which are deep-fried so don't expect much in the way of taste. The shrimp could be local or it could be farmed in Vietnam -- one wouldn't be able to tell the difference. 2. In spite of the unpretentious surroundings their prices aren't cheap. The shrimp burgers are well above $5 (not sure of exact price as I haven't been there in a few years) and they don't accept credit cards. 3. The people who work there have a lousy attitude (I guess they feel they can afford to given the lines that will form around 6:30 p.m. on any night during the season). Last time I went, we ordered 5 shrimp burgers to go. After a 15 min. wait they handed us the bag through the window (the process is kind of like scoring in a crack house). We glanced in the bag and noticed there were only 4 shrimp burgers -- immediately notified the hand behind window that we were short one and they put in a new order for ours. In essence this meant that rather than giving us the next shrimp burger, they put us at the end of the queue and we watched those who arrived after us grab theirs and run. Finally they handed us the missing shrimp burger -- no apologies, confessions, thanks for waiting, nothing. If it weren't for the location this place would've been out of business a long time ago. Sorry for the rant -- as you may have guessed, I'm not a fan.

  • Chris S.

Amazing! I eat here every time I am in Beaufort. This is a real shrimp burger, not 5 fried shrimp on a hamburger bun like other places. The atmosphere is spartan but authentic. How better to experience fresh local seafood, then to sit and eat right across the street from the docks. Great fries and sweet tea as well. If you are in the area, you should give it a try.
